Before I Go to Sleep by S.J. Watson
'As I sleep, my mind will erase everything I did today. I will wake up tomorrow as I did this morning. Thinking I'm still a child. Thinking I have a whole lifetime of choice ahead of me ...' Memories define us. So what if you lost yours every time you went to sleep? Your name, your identity, your past, even the people you love - all forgotten overnight. And the one person you trust may only be telling you half the story. Welcome to Christine's life.
For all lovers of thrillers, especially psychological thrillers, this book is a great read. It is filled with intrigue and disquieting moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Yes, you do have to suspend belief a bit to get into the gist of this book. The main character forgets everything about her life every morning when she wakes up. This might be hard for some of us to believe, but if you do as I did, and just forget a bit the way our mind works for a well structured story, you won’t be disappointed. Christine, our heroine, is an interesting person whom we get to discover along with her when she reads her own, daily, journal entries. She has a fresh voice, and a way of looking at her life, such as it is, that makes us root for her. The rest of the characters suffer a bit, since they are not expanded too much, but still they play a good bunch of supporting roles.
The writing is straightforward, which is a must for theses type of stories. It’s confusing enough for the reader to keep track of what Christine knows and doesn’t know, so to have writing that is almost start, helps to keep us interested and focused.
This was a fun book. It has some faults, but overall I truly had a good time reading it and I can recommend it without issue.
