I would have to say The Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy. I had to read it for my AP English class senior year in high school and I loved it. I've been hooked on Hardy ever since.

Nice! The one and only book I had to read in school that I thoroughly enjoyed was The Count of Monte Cristo. Which is so weird because I was already in my paranormal cravings then--with little to satisfy me--and this book had nothing paranormal in it!
