Musing Mondays

Musing Mondays is a weekly meme that asks you to choose one of the following prompts to answer:
  • I’m currently reading…
  • Up next I think I’ll read…
  • I bought the following book(s) in the past week…
  • I’m super excited to tell you about (book/author/bookish-news)…
  • I’m really upset by (book/author/bookish-news)…
  • I can’t wait to get a copy of…
  • I wish I could read ___, but…
  • I blogged about ____ this past week…

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: What book (or books) would you take with you on vacation? Why?

I love taking Stephen King books on vacation. They are such engrossing reads that I can read them wherever I am and at any time of day or night. I especially love taking them with me when I go camping. There is nothing quite like reading Stephen King novels in a tent.

I'm currently reading It by Stephen King. Have to say that this is one scary book! I thought I was used to King's fright style but this is intense. I am loving it.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Where is the strangest place you’ve ever read a book? OR… Where is the strangest place you’ve ever found a crazy-good book, unexpectedly?

I don't know if it is strange, but one of the most memorable places I've read a book was standing in line to go into the Sherlock Holmes Museum in London. Want to take a guess at what I was reading?

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your answer in a brief comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks!

I have a first edition small booklet where a few of Edgar Allan Poe's stories and poems appeared, including The Gold-Bug." It's definitely a special book for me since I love everything Poe related.
I also have a few editions of "Man, Myth & Magic", which I love.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Do you have a “kindred” reading buddy — someone who very closely shares your taste in books? If not, do you wish you did?

My mom and I used to have similar tastes in books, but she now prefers to read more non-fiction, while I read pretty much anything that lands in my hands.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Do you prefer Hardcover, Trade Paperback, or Mass Market Paperback? Why?

I love paperbacks, of all sorts. I just love how easy they are to hold. Since I usually have an animal on me, whether a snake, a cat, or an opossum, it really helps when I can hold a book in one hand.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: What was your favorite book as a child?

I read The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes when I was nine years old and completely fell in love with Holmes. For a long, long, time this was my absolute favorite book in the world. Holmes and Watson are characters I feel I have known forever.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: What is your favorite lesson learned, or quote, from a recent book you’ve read?

I recently read Barracuda by
“I want two scars, one on each of my shoulder blades.”
He shrugged in confusion. “What do you mean?”
“Two scars,” I repeated, “for where my wings used to be, where my wings were torn away from me.”

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: How often do you use your local library? Are you happy with their availability?

I don't use the library as much anymore. I used to go every Saturday to the nearest branch to my home and look for new things to read, but that was before I started receiving so many review books. Now I usually have more than enough to read at home!

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Who (or what) influences your reading most?

I'm not really influenced by anything or anyone these days when it comes to reading. I tend to read whatever catches my eye. Once in a while, I'll glance through "Best of" lists to find something new to read.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: How many books, approximately, do you think you have in your personal collection?

I once attempted to count all the books I have at home and got to about 1,000 before giving up. That was about ten years ago, too, so I'm afraid that amount has multiplied exponentially. I may have a wee book problem.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
I've been rereading The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson because I read it when I was about ten years old and it just needed a reread. I'm head over heels in love with it and I wish it were longer!

Dear KillerI started reading Dear Killer by Katherine Ewell a few days ago. The premise is pretty interesting: the protagonist is a teenage girl serial killer. Of course, with my obsession with everything serial killer related I had to get my hands on this one. It's pretty good, so far, but a bit simplistic in its approach to the psychology of serial killers.

I just finished Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes. I really enjoyed her previous novel The Shining Girls, so this one was a bit of a disappointment. You can read my review here.

I'm reading Fiend by Peter Stenson. I'm not usually a big zombie fan, don't know why but I'm just not that interested in them, but this book is a comedy, so it is pretty amusing. I'll let you know how it continues.

I wanted to share with you all some pictures from the book reading that I did this past Saturday at Books & Books here in Miami for my novel, THE ROSE MASTER. It was an incredible experience and I had a good turnout. Looking forward to doing it again soon!

Althea & OliverLast night I finished reading an interesting YA novel called Althea & Oliver by Cristina Moracho. It was definitely a very different type of YA novel, and although it wasn't entirely my style, it had some very beautiful moments. The review is coming soon.

The Book of Strange New ThingsI've been reading The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber. It is a very interesting book and, as with all of Faber's novels, it really catches your attention and doesn't let go. Definitely one I would recommend.

I just finished reading Confessions of a Sociopath by M.E. Thomas. It was a very interesting read, though it did get a bit repetitive towards the end. You can read my review here
